Food

Poor and bad nourishment is one the main causes of illness in Nicaragua. The sharp increase of prices of basic food increments in the last months have complicated even more the situation for people.

There are a lot of cases of famine and whole families whose only food for breakfast, lunch or dinner is fried yucca with rice and red beans (arroz con frijoles, also known locally as “gallopinto”).

Having meat is a luxury most of modest families cannot afford often.
The water most families drink (agua del caño) hasn’t the minimal hygienic conditions. Many people drink from a can, periodically filled with a lot of pathogens and bugs, which causes a many infections and diarrhoea.

Work done

•  Financing of meals for National Handicapped children reunion in Granada. With 100$ we could feed 168 people.

•  Monthly allowance of 50€ to family number 1, where family head is a grandmother caring for three grandsons. On the condition that the kids abandon street sale and attend the school.

•  Monthly allowance of 50€ to family number 2, composed of 2 adults, 5 sons, 5 nephews and a grandmother.

•  Welcome of Jorge, whose father works from 6 to 13 and 14 to 21. to avoid him to stay alone, he spends most of the time at the social centre, taking care of his nourishment.

•  Deliveries of more than 150 food packets to poor families.

Note: we refer to families by numbers to preserve their intimacy.

Food Projects

• Carry on with the work done.

• Deliveries of food packets every 6 weeks.

• Medium / Long term – Open a food bank to have surplus, asking assistance to other organizations like save the Children.
  

Housing

The poorest people live in houses that doesn´t have the minimum habitability conditions. It´s the other great cause of infections and high spending in medicines we have. Drops in winter cause colds, poor roofs and walls cause many bugs and insects inside the houses, tight spaces are equal to abuse situations, materials used cause accidents, lacking of wc´s cause infections, etc…

Work done

•  Financing and carrying out of small improvements in some families houses.

Project

•  Building “low-cost” houses, but with much better conditions than the existing presently.
